On November 18th, 2021, China Academy of Sciences released the list of elected academicians of China Academy of Sciences in 2021, and Professor Zhou Xiang of School of Chemistry and Molecular Science of Wuhan University was elected as an academician of China Academy of Sciences (Department of Chemistry).

Zhou Xiang received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Wuhan University in 1986 and 1989, and a doctorate from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1996. From 1996 to 2001, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland in the United States. Since 2001, he has been a professor at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Science of Wuhan University, and is currently the deputy director of the third academic committee of Wuhan University.

Zhou Xiang has been committed to the research of nucleic acid chemistry biology for a long time. His main research directions are: the recognition of nucleic acid structure by small molecules and its functional regulation, and the application of nucleic acid chemistry technology in disease diagnosis and treatment. Through the recognition and functional regulation of nucleic acid structure by small molecules, we have developed nucleic acid-targeted drug molecules and major disease diagnosis technologies, achieved systematic and internationally influential innovative results, and promoted the research and development of nucleic acid chemical biology. He is a dedicated researcher and a rigorous academician, and he has published more than 260 papers in journals such as Acc. Chem. Res., Chem. Soc. Rev., Nat. Chem. Biol., Nat.Commun., Sci. Adv.,Chem, J. Am. Chem. Soc.,Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nucleic Acid Res., JACS Au, Cell Chem. Biol.as corresponding or co-corresponding author. He won the first prize of natural science in Hubei Province (twice, ranking first) and the Second Prize of WuXi AppTec Life Chemistry Research Award.

He has presided over the National Natural Science Foundation's Outstanding Youth Fund Project, the Innovative Research Group Project, and the National 973 Project (Chief Scientist). He was selected as a national candidate for the "Ten Million Talents Project", a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and served as the director of the chinese chemical society Chemical Biology Professional Committee, and served as the editorial board of several academic journals such as ACC.
